An open project, with its history intact

Built from a desktop.
Grown into a system.

Hornero began as a personal configuration, then grew into a set of maintained projects for the shell, themes, operating-system tools, testing and documentation.

How it grew

From dotfiles to HorneroOS

  1. 01

A desktop takes shape in dotfiles

The original Quickshell setup lived in ulises-jeremias/dotfiles, alongside the rest of a personal Arch Linux environment.

  2. 02

The shell becomes its own project

Hornero copied the shell into its own repository while preserving the original source and license. The migration replaced workstation-only paths with XDG-based configuration so installed packages can stand on their own.

  3. 03

    One shell, many arrangements

Earlier Polybar and Waybar configurations informed several familiar topologies. Cockpit Clear and Islands cite Polybar; Cozy Minimal and Dock Bottom cite Waybar. Today, 15 layouts arrange bars and islands through one Quickshell system and one shared preset format.

  4. 04

The operating system grows around it

Theme packs, horneroctl, the greeter, an installer contract and a dedicated QA repository give the desktop a path from source code to a tested system.

Maintained in clear pieces

Every part has a home.

The repositories are separate so each layer can be reviewed, packaged and tested at the right boundary.

Influence, credit and direction

Learn from good work. Keep our own shape.

Code ancestry

The Quickshell shell is adapted from Caelestia Shell. The upstream author, license and imported commit remain documented in the repository.

Design references

Ryoku, DankMaterialShell and Omarchy help us study how other teams make settings discoverable, themes coherent and Linux desktops approachable.

Hornero’s direction

Those references inform the questions we ask, not the answers we copy. Hornero keeps its own visual range, open development and product decisions.
